Luring Boar

Overview

This scenario tries to teach you all little tricks that you need to lure any boar on the map.

Scenario Info

  • Victory: Be the first to bring a boar under your town center.
  • Way to victory: Lure the boar with your scout and then take over with a villager. Scouts can’t cross the ice!
  • Players: 1-2
  • Civs: Mongols

Basics

Luring with a villager

The normal way to lure a boar is to send out a villager and then run back to the TC to eat it there. If you want a boar to follow you all the way then a villager must shoot twice before running back. Obstacles along the way may force you to shoot again, but experience will tell you that.

Luring with a scout or eagle warrior

Scouts are much harder to use as lurers but can save you villager time on closed maps or to steal hostile boars! The start is the same: you hit a boar twice with a scout and then run. But if you run in a straight line, the boar will eventually stop chasing you and run back. So you must zig zag so the boar stays close enough. You can also use the stop button to keep the boar close enough but that needs a bit more micro and is harder to pull off with the traditional multiplayer lag.

On the Battlefield

Luring boar is one of the basics in multiplayer gaming. And once you’re getting more familiar with the game you can start pulling boars in closed maps (Michi/Black Forest-style maps). The next step is to steal hostile boar(s) to deal an early blow to an enemy. However, stealing a boar and thus disrupting an enemy’s building order doesn’t mean you won the game already, not even if you manage to steal two boars!

Practical Example I

An impossible lure? A villager won’t survive the trip? Here are some tricks to survive a long boar lure. The first one is performed by L_Clan_Chris, who pulled a boar from quite a distance on a 8 players Nomad map.

The villager is nearly dead, but some sheep come to the rescue!

The sheep obstruct the boar from getting too close to the villager. In the meanwhile, another villager comes to help.

The other villager takes over and continues the lure.

Mission completed!

Practical Example II

Sometimes a villager seems to “crash”. He constantly turns around to shoot the boar instead of running back. Even when you didn’t tell him anything else but to run. Even then it’s possible to save your villager.

Villager is crashing and refuses to run.

A quick palisade to the rescue!

Another villager to continue the lure

Recorded Games

_21tc_AK_47 vs _MyST_Hero2003

Notice how _21tc_AK_47 even sends a sheep back after _MyST_Hero2003 stole his 2 boars. Fairplay to the top from his side and a well deserved victory in the end! Very cool blooded playing from AK_47.

L_Clan_Spring_ vs Xhing

Probably the most known recorded game of a double boar steal. Xhing kept cool and Spring thought he already won without a fight. Xhing proved him wrong! Igloo most likely played with Xhing’s nick that day, we try to get our facts right here!

should mention something about protecting your boars (always going for forward boar first, and trying to disrupt the person who steals your boar.)
