War Story

An old game from the very first Nation’s Cup (held in 2001). The game is set on islands between Italy and USA, with both nations being able to field some top players of their time.

For once I’m not going to tell the war story myself, but will leave parole to Haws, StorM_Panther_ in the game.

“It was the finals for the nations cup on blind random and we chose pers/vik/hun to their mong/vik/hun. The map came out to be islands, and since I took persians, that made me happy Smile Swinger made an early mistake by milling instead of making a lumber camp – that error changed the pace of the game. I played pretty poorly in the dark age, I had trouble with being housed the whole game. I managed to feudal a few seconds after my guy, with 1 more dock than he had. Swinger was late on fishing and suffered because of it. The grush was somewhat of a draw, but I think they won it in feudal.

Swinger decided to land against my wishes, but when I watched the rec I am glad he did, it gave us a chance to get the water back. Once red castled, and mimmox landed him though, it was pretty much over for Swinger. He made the best of the situation, which allowed Dante and I to take the water. I don’t know why I didn’t attack my guy – going into the game I was pretty confident that this game would be over quickly. Guess that shows how much I knew Smile.

Dante played an awesome pocket, and I tried my best to clear everyone off of the water. I did try to land my guy when I imped, but it didn’t work too well, and I got pushed off again. Meanwhile, Dante and Swinger were in the process of taking back Swinger’s island, and we had claimed 2 of the 3 middle islands. When my guy landed, initially I wanted to fight back. But then I realized that nothing was left on my island, and if he wanted to waste the resources on capturing my island, then good for him.

I slowed him up a bit and relocated to Swingers island, and tributed my resources to Dante to finish up on water. By then Swinger had been able to rebuild a navy and get back into the fighting, and we had complete control of the water. After wiping out Mimmox’s naval trade route, we went cannon galleys to seal the victory.

In the end, we only kept a single island, but we won because we never gave up the water. If I hadn’t underestimated our opponents (I cant speak for Dante or Swinger), I don’t think the game would have gone the way it did. Underestimate someone and you leave the door open for them to win, and they nearly did. For the record I still like my game vs StorM_Winds was better Smile

This game has been listed in the “Best Recorded Games of All Time” at MrFixitOnline, a hall of fame made in 2007. This game got the 4th place and righteous so. You can read the full entry here.

Excellent recording. Can’t believe Swing went for mill and no fish! Also, I guess back then map scripts weren’t as well known, but to miss four sheep the long seems weird. And not knowing that more fish are on the backside of the island; purple saying “no fish for me” when he had tons on the other side……

Very interesting perspective, because I usually think of transports and land wars winning eventually on islands, and grushing just being a way to keep enemy fishing down, fishing being the most efficient way (besides Mongol hunting) of obtaining food. But having cannon galleon saved their bacon here, and winning SOLELY based on naval domination is really unusual. Thumbs up for another great recording.
