The aXe Files

Just make axemen! What civilization could possibly survive when it got axes thrown at it all the time?

War Story

Franks have a hard time in arena. They got superb castle warfare, but they’re vurnerable to monks and they better stay away from imperial trashwars. Disclaimer knew this, so he decided to play the traditional Frank game to the extreme. Not just a few castles, but a continous castle push. Wakko had Byzantines, so with great monks, great trash and great fast imp capabilities he technically had everything on his side. Well, everything but the axeman of course! For about 50 minutes you’ll see nothing but throwing axeman, just till the stone runs out for more castles. But with the superb map control he gained by then, Disclaimer could just switch to champs and cannons and give Wakko his final blow.

I think Throwing Axeman is the second/third best unique unit in the game (after Huskarls and Mamelukes) by virtue of the fact that they don’t replace another unit.

Mangudais are powerful and all, but they completely replace cavalry archers. Same with most of the other UU’s. When people use them, they don’t use the units that they replace. But the TA’s don’t replace any units. If you have TA’s in your army, you can still use champs, halbs, etc. or any other unit in the tech tree. I’m only counting FU units here; Franks have bad archers, so that’s out of the question.

The uniqueness of TA’s kind of complement the bad tech tree of the Franks.
