War Story

This game is filled with great tactical decisions from Ruso. It’s possible that I forget to describe some in the resume! The game was one of the final matches in an arena tournament (Ruso won 3:0). Mongols are considered to be way better than Teutons on this map, but Ruso used the strengths of his civ to the maximum. Both players went FC without anything notable. Ruso made some monks to gather relics (and convert some loose mangudai) while Rodrigus dropped a castle outside his gates so he could raid Ruso with mangudai. However, mangudai need to be in sufficient numbers to win against monks. Ruso then made 3 forward guard towers next to his stone mine. The purpose of those wasn’t clear yet but it soon became. Ruso hit imp (before Rodrigus) and researched chemistry. He made more monks and started to create bombard cannons. Mangudai obviously counter siege so Rodrigus tried to shoot them all down. Here the towers came into play and a combination of wololo and towers held off Rodrigus’ mangudai. Rodrigus started to make trebuchets now and started to take down the towers, monks and cannons with them. But trebuchets lack mobility and after some micro gaming Ruso’s bombard cannons came out victorious. At that point Ruso broke out of his arena and started to mass bombard towers inside the small space between their towns. Rodrigus started to make rams but Ruso’s villagers and bombards could fend them off. Temporarily though because Rodrigus now started to send hussars along. The only thing in Ruso’s army that countered hussars were his bombard towers, but their fire was fully absorbed by the siege rams. Ruso decided to make trade carts then. Probably more as a fun element since he was already 2:0 in the tournament’s final but it actually worked wonders. Hussars automatically attack trade carts before monks. So Ruso’s monks now had time enough to convert the hussars and soon there were more Teutonic hussars than Mongol ones. Ruso kept pushing (now from 2 sides) and Rodrigus was forced to resign. If Ruso didn’t make those tradecarts as meatshield, he might as well have lost a lot more towers to hostile rams!
